Zoom: Setting Your Profile Picture and Display Name
Description of the video:
Setting a profile picture in Zoom can be useful for times when you can’t use your webcam – if your webcam isn’t turned on, your user picture will display instead of your video feed so people can still see you, even if it’s just a picture. You’ll also want to make sure your name is displaying properly in Zoom. In this video, I’ll go over how to change both your profile picture and your displayed name.
Adding and changing profile pictures
First, let’s start with setting a profile picture. There are two ways you can do this: you can upload a profile picture using the Zoom website, or you can add one during a meeting right in Zoom. I’ll start out by demonstrating how to do this on the website.
Adding or changing a profile picture on the Zoom website
- To start, in a web browser, go to zoom.iu.edu and click the Log in to Zoom If the IU Login screen appears, log in with your IU username and passphrase.
- Once you’re logged in, in the navigation on the left side of the page, click
- Your profile will display –if you don’t have a profile picture set up, to the left of your name you’ll see the default user picture of a gray person on a light gray background. If you do have a picture chosen, it’ll display here.
- To change your profile picture, underneath the picture thumbnail, click
- The Change Picture dialog box will appear. To upload a picture, in the bottom left corner of the dialog box, click Upload.
- The File Upload dialog box will appear. From here, navigate to the file you want to upload, and click on it to select it. Then, click the Open button.
- Zoom will upload your profile picture. Once it’s uploaded, you’ll be able to select which part of the image you want to use for your profile picture by pressing and dragging the corners of the selection boundary to indicate which part of the image you want to use.
- When you’re done, click the Save button to save your changes.
- Your new profile picture will display next to your name on your profile. In Zoom meetings, it will display instead of your video when your video feed is turned off, and will also appear next to your username in the participants list.
Adding or changing a profile picture while in a Zoom meeting
- You can also add or change your profile picture while participating in a Zoom meeting. Let’s see how to do this.
- To start, in the Zoom toolbar at the bottom of the Zoom window, click on Participants to open the participant list.
- In the participant list, hover your mouse over your name, then click the More button to the right of your name when it appears.
- From here, the steps are a little different for each process – first, I’ll go through the steps for adding a profile picture if you don’t already have one, and afterwards I’ll point out what to do if you already have a profile picture set.
- At this point, depending on whether or not you already have a profile picture chosen, you’ll see different options available to you in the More menu. If you don’t have a profile picture set, to start the process of adding one, click Add Profile Picture.
- After clicking on Add Profile Picture, the File Upload dialog box will appear. From here, navigate to the file you want to upload, and click on it to select it. Then click, the Open button.
- The Add Profile Picture window will appear and display the profile picture you’ve chosen. From here, you can zoom in or out on the picture, or reposition it by pressing and dragging the image.
- When you’re done, click the Save button to save your changes.
- Now, let’s quickly go through the steps for changing an existing profile picture. We’ll pick back up where we clicked on the More button and the menu appeared – if you already have a profile picture, click Edit Profile Picture to upload a new image.
- The Edit Profile Picture window will appear. To upload a new profile picture, under the left side of the image preview, click Change Picture.
- The Edit Profile Picture dialog box will appear. Navigate to the file you want to upload, then click on it to select it and click the Open button.
- From here, the steps are the same as they were for adding a profile picture – make adjustments to the image in the preview, and when you’re done, in the lower right corner of the Edit Profile Picture window, click the Save button to save your changes.
- After a moment, your new picture will display next to your name in the participants list, and will also display on screen when your webcam isn’t turned on.
Changing your displayed name in Zoom
Sometimes, depending on how you signed into a Zoom meeting, your displayed name may not show your full name. Let’s see how to change this so it’s showing your name properly.
- To change your displayed name, you’ll need to display the participant list, if it’s not already showing. As a quick reminder, to view the participant list, in the Zoom menu at the bottom of the window, click Participants and the list will appear.
- Next, hover over your name in the list – even if it’s incorrect, it’ll display with the word “me” in parentheses next it. The More button will appear to the right of your name.
- Click the More button, and in the menu that appears, click Rename.
- The Rename dialog box will appear, with the text “Enter a new screen name” displayed over the field where you can enter your name. Type your name into the field, and then click the OK button.
- Your displayed name will change in the participant list to match what you typed in the Rename dialog box.
