Education Certification (EdCert)

IMPORTANT NOTE: The EdCert program is moving to management by IT Community Partnerships to foster deeper connections and more targeted learning opportunities for IT Pros at Indiana University. Learn more about available IT Pro tools and services:

Please contact IT Community Partnerships at to register for workshops or if you have any questions about the EdCert program.

What is the EdCert program?

EdCert, or Education Certification, is a UITS sponsored program aimed at delivering high-quality advanced technical training to departmental computing support providers, technical staff, enrolled IU students, and faculty who teach advanced technical topics in their academic classes. Taking EdCert courses helps prepare attendees to take industry standard professional certification exams as well.

The goal of the EdCert program is to help elevate the technical expertise and professional credentials of the IU community in general and departmental computing support staff in particular, and to build a solid technical infrastructure and advanced technical skill set at Indiana University.

What topics are taught in the EdCert program?

Topics include, but are not limited to Microsoft Windows and desktop system administration, Linux server, Networking and Security, and advanced SharePoint group site administration.

See the full list of topics offered and the current EdCert training schedule.

Where are EdCert courses taught?

Most EdCert classes are taught in IT Training’s main EdCert classroom: IT125 on the IUPUI campus. In addition to the in-person classroom instruction, all classes are taught live online at the same time, enabling eligible participants from all eight Indiana University campuses to participate without having to drive to Indianapolis.

Who can take EdCert courses?

The Microsoft Windows Server and Desktop courses (which are taught using the Microsoft Official Curriculum - MOC) use licensing restricted courseware. For this reason, these courses can only be taken by people in one of the following groups:

  1. Local Computing Support Providers (Indiana University LSPs that are registered with LSP Services)
  2. Technical support staff (including all UITS staff)
  3. Students who are currently enrolled in an academic class at Indiana University
  4. Faculty who teach advanced technical skills to their students

If you believe you are part of an eligible group but are unable to register, please contact us.

All other EdCert courses can be taken by anyone.

See descriptions of all EdCert workshops and register.

Are there any additional registration restrictions for EdCert workshops?

Since the materials for most EdCert workshops are ordered from a 3rd party source, you must register for EdCert workshops 3 business days in advance of the first teach date to guarantee your seat. If you have missed the cut off date and would like to register, please contact our IUPUI office and we will try to accommodate you.

What professional certification exams are available in the EdCert program?

IT Training offers 30 day access to Transcender practice exams for free to anyone who takes a Microsoft Official Curriculum (MOC) or CompTIA EdCert training course (note this does not include the SharePoint or Mac OS EdCert courses). These exams give you authentic experience taking practice exams that can help prepare you to take professional certification exams. Learn more about the Transcender practice exam program.

The EdCert program gives you the opportunity to earn a professional credential that has value in the marketplace by passing an industry standard Pearson Vue exam. In addition, if you successfully pass your Transcender practice exam on two (2) separate days with a score of 80% or more, and send us a screen shot proof of both passing marks, we will provide you with a free voucher to take a Microsoft exam or sell you a CompTIA exam voucher at a heavily discounted price. These vouchers can then be used to take an exam at any Pearson Vue testing center. This is a huge value given that most Pearson Vue exams retail for $150 to $250 or more. Learn more on our Pearson Vue exam page.

What other advanced technical training options are available from IT Training?

For other advanced IT topics like Java programming, Cisco, and Oracle, IU students, faculty and staff should consider purchasing a Pluralsight subscription or Skillsoft IT bundle. For around $100 per year, these services will give you access to thousands of self-paced advanced elearning courses. The Skillsoft IT bundle includes access to IT focused ebooks, test exams, and online instructor mentoring, and it is also available to anyone who attends a classroom-based EdCert course or IT Training workshop and members of Indiana-based educational and governmental organizations. For more information, visit our Pluralsight and Skillsoft pages.

What additional certification options are available?

In addition to the Transcender and Pearson Vue IT Certifications, you can take Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) exams which enable you to certify your skills in Office applications by taking Microsoft certified exams. For more information, visit our Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) page.
