CGI: The Basics

This workshop is intended for people who have at least basic knowledge of Perl and HTML. It explains how CGI fits in to the HTTP transaction to produce dynamic content, then provides guided exercises showing how to generate HTML and how to use data from a web form. Participants will convert a command line Perl script to a small, web accessible CGI application.

Can’t make it to the workshop?

Participants will:

  • learn the role CGI plays on the Web
  • understand the GET and POST methods
  • generate scripted HTML output
  • use form data from within a script
  • create a simple look-up application

The following workshops are suggested prerequisites to this workshop:

Participants should already be able to:

  • Understand basic Perl syntax
  • Create HTML forms with a text editor
  • Transfer files using FTP
  • Manage files, directories and permissions in a Unix environment
