Connecting to a Network via VPN

A virtual private network (VPN) is a secure means of connecting to a private network (such as your home, office, or the University) via a public network. The VPN works by building an encrypted tunnel back to your home or office network and then forwards all your traffic from there, as if it were originating on your own trusted network. This tunnel allows you to securely transfer information and to access remote resources.

The VPN connection is especially important to those using wireless connections since it provides authentication and encryption when using the wireless network. In addition, it allows you to authenticate and act as part of the IU network when you’re connected to an off-campus network, such as when you’re using a non-IU Internet service provider (ISP). When you use the IU VPN, you can access IP-restricted university resources and connect to network file servers such as library databases. For more information on the basics of VPN at IU, go to:

To download the VPN Installer for Bloomington or IUPUI, click on the Networking link at:

If you just need to use websites through the IU VPN, you can go to the following website:

http://vpn.iu.edu

Logging in there with your IU username and password from off campus will allow you to view webpages as if you were on campus. This can be useful for websites that require you to havean Indiana University IP adress to function.
