Unix is a popular operating system used on many central systems and web servers. This workshop is intended for people who have little or no experience working with Unix from the command line. It gives a quick overview of how Unix works, explains the directory structures, and provides guided practice with core file management commands and setting file permissions. vi is a fast, flexible, and powerful text editing program originally designed for the Unix environment. While vi can run on many operating systems, it is most commonly found and used on Unix and Linux platforms. Due to this ubiquity, the vi editor is a handy tool for everyone needing to create or modify text files in a number of environments.
