How-to Demonstrations

Following are animated demonstrations that show you how you can perform some of the most-used functions of UniCom with Office Communicator and Live Meeting. Instructions are all contained in textual callouts. The demos open in separate windows containing player controls.

Testing Your Equipment:

To use the voice communication capabilities of UniCom, you'll need a headset. If you want to do video conferencing, you'll also need a webcam. For information about headsets and webcams that UITS recommends, see the IU Knowledge Base Article at https://kb.iu.edu/data/awgk.html.

Placing PC-to-PC Calls:

Using the Office Communicator Search field, you can hunt for people and then call them on your PC. The UniCom system searches the IU Global Address List (GAL) and your personal Outlook Contact list.

If you have UniCom with Telephone Integration and UniCom with Outlook Voice Mail, you can place a call using a phone number. For more information regarding UniCom options, see https://kb.iu.edu/data/awxm.html.

Using the Dial Pad During a Call

Some of your calls might require a long distance authorization code or extension number. When using your desk phone, you would simply press the numbers on your phone. However, if you are initiating the call using UniCom, you need to use the Dial pad in the conversation Window.

Setting the Preferred Calling Device (Available with Unicom with Telephone Integration Only)

The Preferred Calling Device determines the device you use to carry out your phone conversations. There are two modes: UniCom’s Computer mode or your desktop Phone.

Each time you set a Preferred Calling Device, the specified mode applies to all future calls until you change it.  Note, both calling modes allow you to dial using either your UniCom interface or the desktop phone. In other words, your phone works as usual. You may want to set the Preferred Calling Device to Phone if you are using your desk phone in speaker mode but you want to initiate the call from UniCom.

Additional Calling Features:

There are many calling features available with UniCom, including adding parties to a current phone call, and redirecting incoming calls (not available with UniCom Basic mode).

You can invite multiple participants to a call. When more than two people are in a call, the call becomes a Conference Call.

Using Unicom with Telephone Integration or Unicom with Outlook Voice Mail, you can redirect incoming calls to alternate numbers (mobile or other) that you have entered in your UniCom preferences.

Using Contacts and Preferences

Your Office Communicator window can store a large set of Contacts to enable convenient calling. You can add anyone from the IU Global Address List (GAL) or your Outlook Personal Contact List, by searching for them by name or email address. In addition, every time you initiate a call or someone calls you, the call is recorded in the Contact list in Office Communicator.

Managing Access Levels of Contacts

Every one of your contacts is automatically assigned an Access Level. With Access Levels, you control how much of your information people can see, and how they are able to contact you, depending on your Presence Status.

Collaboration Features of UniCom

UniCom allows you to confer with others in a variety of ways besides PC-to-PC calling. You can chat via instant messages (IM), participate in video calls, and conduct Live Meetings with audio and video that may also feature screen and application sharing.
